Watkins wins national championship, Shute two-time All-American

Birmingham-Southern College track senior Jamal Watkins of McDonough, Ga., successfully defended his NCAA Division III Indoor title by winning the 60-meter dash in 6.78 seconds on March 10 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Senior Karmin Shute of Fayetteville, Ga., went 2-3 in the 200-meter and 60-meter dashes, respectively, to earn two All-America honors.

Watkins ran the fastest time in the prelims. He now has three national titles, two indoor and one outdoor. He concludes his indoor career as the BSC record holder in the 55-meter, 60-meter, and 200-meter dashes.

Shute finished second in the 200-meter dash in a new BSC record time of 24.64. She had run the sixth fastest time in the 60-meter prelims. She earned third place by running a personal best 7.61. 

This is the first time BSC has hosted the Track and Field NCAA Division III National Championship.
